Identity card and passport
All citizens must have proof of identity.
Every German who is at least 16 years old and is subject to compulsory registration or who spends the majority of their time in Germany is obliged to have a valid identity card (compulsory identification).
Anyone in possession of a valid passport is also required to have a valid identity card.
Please note that ID cards and passports cannot be extended and that you must apply for a new document in good time before the expiry date.
Citizens of the European Union (EU) and nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA) can apply for an eID card if they are at least 16 years old.
With this new chip card, they can identify themselves online securely, easily and with a high level of trust. The online ID function of the eID card is used for this purpose.
To check your name, please bring your current civil status certificate (original!), depending on your marital status, certificate of descent/birth or marriage certificate and, if applicable, proof of name change with you to the appointment. The submission of a certificate is required in the context of completing the register of residents in accordance with § 3 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz) to compare data and to add missing data.
We would also like to point out that a current biometric passport photo must be submitted when applying for a document.
(Kopie 3)
Note on applying for identity documents for minors:
The application for identity documents (identity card, passport) for under 16-year-olds (identity card) and under 18-year-olds (passport) requires the application of both parents if they are jointly entitled to parental custody and the right of residence. The personal appearance of one parent alone is sufficient if the written consent of the other parent is available. You can find a corresponding form under Downloads. Otherwise, the application for identity documents can be made by the parent with custody if custody is proven by means of a custody order or a negative certificate (not older than 4 weeks).
Please bring the civil status documents (e.g. birth certificate and/or marriage certificate / custody order / negative certificate) with you to the appointment.
Please note that since January 1, 2024, no more children's passports will be issued, renewed or updated. Children's passports that have already been issued can continue to be used until the end of their validity.
Since 01.01.2024, only the following documents can be issued for children with German citizenship for upcoming trips abroad:
Passport: The passport can be used worldwide without restriction. As a rule, production takes approx. 4-6 weeks. Alternatively, the passport can be produced within 5 working days using the express procedure (for an additional charge). In justified individual cases, it is also possible to apply for a temporary passport - if recognized in the destination country - which can usually be issued immediately on site.
Identity card: When traveling within the European Union or the Schengen area, an identity card, which takes approx. 4 weeks to produce, is sufficient. Attention: In Great Britain (since 01.10.2021) a passport is again required for Germans entering the country. Temporary identity cards, which are only valid for 3 months, may also be considered - if recognized in the destination country - and can be issued immediately.
You can find out about the current entry requirements for the country you are traveling to on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.
Collection of identity documents already applied for:
Identity cards and passports that have already been applied for are available for collection at StadtService H35 during regular opening hours once they have been completed. An appointment is not necessary.
