History

Debschwitz was first mentioned in 1363 as Tuschwicz and in 1532 as Dobschitz. With industrialization, the district grew rapidly as a suburb of Gera. This shaped the district and made it a "working-class district" right up to the present day. Heinrichsgrün and Debschwitz were shaped by this development not only in terms of urban planning, but also architecturally In 1909, the Debschwitz school was built. Today's Fuchsturm was built in 1901 as the Kaiser "Wilhelm Tower" and continues to shape the image of the district to this day.

On April 1, 1912, Debschwitz was incorporated into Gera; at that time, Debschwitz was one of the largest communities in the Principality of Reuss junior line.

In the former Pöppeln (part of the Debschwitz/Heinrichsgrün district), the dahlia garden was planted in 1928 on the former site of the streetcar turning loop. As early as 1934, the first cycling track was built on the former shooting range in Gera. The zoo was opened in 1962 in Debschwitzer Martinsgrund. The park railroad, which was founded in 1975 as a pioneer railroad, invites young and old to take a ride through the Martinsgrund in the zoo.

In 2022, the first children's maypole setting took place in Debschwitz.
